NIELIT Practical Exam — Commences July 21, 2026
The practical examination for O, A, B, and C levels starts on July 21, 2026. NIELIT conducts practical exams in a phased manner across designated examination centres across India.
Your practical exam date and centre are available on your admit card at student.nielit.gov.in. Download your admit card and check the practical exam details specifically, the date for the practical may differ from your theory exam centre or date.
For O Level students, the practical examination tests your ability to work on a computer system in real time. The tasks are based on the same modules covered in the theory exam: IT tools, LibreOffice applications, internet usage, and programming tasks, depending on the modules you registered for.
Practical exam preparation points:
- Practice LibreOffice Writer, Calc, and Impress specifically, not Microsoft Office. NIELIT uses LibreOffice in practical centres.
- Know basic file management operations in the operating system — saving, renaming, moving files across folders.
- For programming module practicals, be comfortable writing and running basic programs in the language you studied.
- Read the question paper in the practical exam completely before starting. Time management matters more in practicals than in theory.

What Are the Passing Marks and Grade Chart for NIELIT O Level 2026?
Passing NIELIT is not binary. The exam uses a grade system that matters more than a simple pass or fail. Many government job notifications specify minimum grade requirements, not just a passing mark.
| Marks Percentage | Grade | What It Means |
| Below 50% | F | Failed — can re-appear next cycle |
| 50% to 54% | D | Minimum pass — accepted for basic requirements |
| 55% to 64% | C | Satisfactory pass |
| 65% to 74% | B | Good grade — meets most government job requirements |
| 75% to 84% | A | Very good grade |
| 85% and above | S | Outstanding — highest NIELIT grade |
What this means practically:
A Grade D pass (scoring between 50 and 54 percent) gets you a NIELIT certificate. But several state government job notifications, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi, specify Grade B or above (65 percent or higher) as the minimum requirement. If you score 52 percent, you pass, but you may be ineligible for the specific vacancy you are targeting.
Before the exam, check the job notification you are applying for and find out exactly which grade it requires. Then set your preparation target accordingly. Preparing to score 65 percent is very different from preparing to just pass.
At Infotech Softnet, students enrolled in our NIELIT O Level Course in Dwarka Mor are coached with their target grade in mind, not just the minimum pass mark. This is one of the reasons our students consistently achieve Grade A and Grade B results.
Last Minute Preparation Tips for the NIELIT O Level Theory Exam
With the exam beginning July 11, here is how to use the remaining time effectively.
Focus on high-weightage modules first. IT Tools and Business Systems (M1) and Internet Technology and Web Design (M2) carry significant question weight in the O Level theory paper. If you have limited time, these two modules deserve the most attention.
Revise LibreOffice functions specifically. Writer formatting shortcuts, Calc formula syntax (SUM, IF, VLOOKUP), and Impress slide management come up repeatedly in theory questions — not just in the practical. Do not assume these are only practical topics.
Go through previous cycle question patterns. NIELIT O Level question papers from previous July and January cycles are available on nielit.gov.in. The pattern of questions is consistent. Reviewing 2 to 3 previous papers gives you a reliable idea of what to prioritize.
Do not leave questions unanswered. Most O Level modules follow a mixed format. There is typically no negative marking on objective sections. Attempt every question.
Check your admit card today. Know your exact centre, session timing, and module schedule before the exam week begins. Arriving at the wrong session time or wrong centre on exam day is an avoidable problem.
What to Expect in the NIELIT O Level Practical Exam
The practical examination is where many students who scored well in theory still struggle. Here is what actually happens.
You are seated at a computer at the examination centre. The invigilator provides a printed question paper with tasks to complete on the computer within the allotted time. These tasks include:
- Word processing tasks in LibreOffice Writer: typing, formatting, inserting tables, headers and footers, using paragraph styles
- Spreadsheet tasks in LibreOffice Calc: entering data, writing formulas, sorting, using functions like SUM, IF, AVERAGE, creating charts
- Presentation tasks in LibreOffice Impress: creating slides, applying transitions, inserting images and text boxes
- Internet-based tasks: navigating websites, downloading files, email-related operations (at centres with internet access)
The most common reason students lose marks in the practical is unfamiliarity with LibreOffice. If your preparation was done on Microsoft Office, the menu structure and keyboard shortcuts are different enough to slow you down significantly under exam conditions.
The second most common issue is file management. Students who do not know how to save a file to a specific folder, rename it correctly, or find it again after saving often lose marks on submission tasks.
Practice both of these specifically in the remaining days.
